ABOUT BETTY ARNDT

Capturing Life and Creating Art with Color

I have been painting for over forty years, specializing in oil and watercolor. My work is best described as "stylized representational". I have always preferred painting from actual objects and landscapes, although the object becomes secondary as I strive to simplify the forms through the use of rich bold color and shape.

My vision is clearly not a literal interpretation of the landscape or object. My technique involves creating shape not only with lines, but with colors. To me, color is the very essence of art and my paintings come alive through its use. My style has evolved over time and place.

Born in Chicago, art has been my passion since I was a young child. I was inspired by the Art Institute of Chicago. I moved to Laguna Beach, California in my early twenties and was further influenced by the local artist colony. I began studying art professionally with local artists and at the Laguna Beach School of Art & Design. My style portrayed realistic views of the ocean and the rocky coastline.

Moving back to the Midwest in my thirties allowed me to study with the innovative Martha Hayden, an inspiring teacher who helped me to free my style and interpret the Midwest landscape in a new way. I also spent time studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Finally, moving to Colorado inspired me to experiment with color even further. As the sun moves and with each passing cloud, the Rocky Mountains change their colors from green to gold to brown to misty blues and purples. As an artist, it's hard not to be inspired by the changing color palette.

I am a member of several Colorado Artist Guilds and Associations: Parker Artists Guild, Colorado Artists Guild, Lakewood Arts Council, and the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild. My work can be viewed in numerous galleries, exhibits, art shows and on this website in the Gallery section.

My husband and I reside in Parker, Colorado. We are blessed with four grown children and wonderful grandchildren. You may contact me via email at bettyarndt@yahoo.com.
